ESP Company History
In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s the Water Conditioning Industry was booming. News about pollution and the rise of pollution-related diseases created an awareness of the need for high quality drinking water. During this ‘boom-time’ companies were going into (and out of) business by the dozens every year. They assembled reverse osmosis and water filtration systems and sold them to wholesalers, stores and multi-level marketing companies all over the world. Business was profitable and those companies did not want to be bothered with the trials of providing customer service or by the low profit margins earned by offering replacement filters. From a family who had been in the water business since 1957 Doug Edison, our co-founder, clearly represented a new generation in the way he approached the business. It wasn’t enough to simply rack up profits. He recognized the frustration of those customers who had no place to go for help, who could not find replacement parts and filters, or who were being charged exorbitant prices for the filters they found. In this complete void of service, he saw an opportunity to diverge from ‘industry tradition’ and to create a new type of business within the industry – one focused on taking care of customers by solving their problems and offering them a dependable supply of replacement products and supplies.
Customer Service? Looking at the Water Treatment Industry in a New Way
Tapping into early database technology Doug began capturing information (and ideas) from every frustrated caller. Ultimately he left the family business and, in 1991, co-founded Environmental Safety Products. Using his contacts in the industry, information from early product sales, and from other company’s ‘orphan’ customers, ESP began sending their customers and prospective customers ‘reminders’, telling them it was time to replace their filters, and letting them know that we were there to assist them. And the business began to grow.
Over the next several years ESP’s efforts to build this new form of business were often waylaid by the demands of larger customers and major projects, but the idea and the customer care ethic survived. As the public’s comfort with internet shopping grew, the idea of revolutionizing the water industry by providing customer service to the masses became a realistic possibility. In 1999 espwaterproducts.com was conceived and in 2003 it became a reality.
If imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery then ESP has had huge success with its concept because the idea has spread. There are now multiple web-sites offering replacement water filters, and even a few offering premium products. However 55 years of combined experience in the industry has instilled a depth of knowledge that cannot be duplicated -- our customer service remains unsurpassed.

What else do we do?
A major focus over the years has been an effort to create portable water systems that can be used in undeveloped countries. Our ultimate goal is to create a product that can truly save lives. We’ve had success in our efforts to achieve this goal. Today both our portable and fixed systems are in thousands of locations. We provide safe drinking water in government embassies and offices, and in towns, villages and camps in some of the most remote areas of the world.
In addition:
• ESP is honored to provide systems and specialty filters to some of the largest relief organizations and one of the largest missionary organizations in the world. We have been doing so since 1996.
• Commissioned by various U S government agencies ESP has developed numerous proprietary water filtration/purification devices for these agencies - earning the company several long-term contracts with the United States Government.
The Final Word
Our focus is customer service. We enjoy what we do and we’re good at it, as is evidenced by the testimonials we receive.
